There's a good chance you're not new to the skincare game. You clean. You double clean. You moisturize. You wear the best masks ever (right?). But there are probably some products you haven't heard of, and one of them is an essence. So here's everything you need to know about this often-overlooked skincare staples.

What does it do?

Imagine a dry sponge. Now imagine getting that sponge to soak up soap that's been spilled on the counter. That wouldn't work well, right? But if you get the sponge wet, wring it out, and then try cleaning up the soap, it will absorb much better.

The same goes for your skin. After you've cleansed and toned your skin, it still hasn't been moisturized yet, which means that the next skincare products you use won't absorb as well. An essence prepares your skin for the hydration that's going to come after it. Think of it as a way of supercharging your skincare products.  It's an important product, and amplifies the efficacy of the rest of your routine.

What's it made of?

An essence is made of highly concentrated ingredients that work on a cellular level to combat fine lines and wrinkles. The active ingredients vary brand to brand, but the molecular weight is still much smaller than a night cream, so it absorbs deeper into your skin.

What does it feel like?

Because an essence isn't as highly concentrated as a serum, it feels slightly more liquid. It's also more lightweight.

How do you apply it?

After you've thoroughly cleansed your skin and applied a toner, use a dabbing motion to apply the essence all over your face. Don't apply like you're waxing a car. Instead, tap the essence in like you're pressing it into your skin. That helps it absorb better than just wiping it around.

Do you need an essence?

Yes. And once you try one, you'll never go back.
